Dreams To Be

” ‘ere now. There’s a line!” Protested a man waiting in line for ice cream.

“I’m on maneuvers,” said Lieutenant Cosset, cutting in at the front of the line.

“Wot? On Sunday? In the bloody middle of London?”

Cosset ignored the man and the murmurs of others waiting. He addressed the ice cream vendor. “I understand you have the best ice cream in London. What’s so great about it?”

“It is magic ice cream,” replied the vendor. An ancient man, heavily wrinkled with twinkling eyes. “You become what you dreamed of when you were a child.”

“Magic? Yes that’s nice for the kids. I’ll have a…”

The vendor smiled and handed him a Daquiri Ice in a sugarcone. Cosset’s favorite. Stunned, he paid wordlessly and sat down. Soon he was lost in thought, sitting in the sun with his ice cream.

When he finished, he found himself cutting in line again. He paid for the ice cream of all waiting in line, and brought a cone to a homeless boy watching nearby.

Lieutenant Cosset walked away feeling good; feeling like the chivalrous knight he always dreamed he would be.

That ice cream was indeed the best in London, he thought.

A sweet tale indeed. Promoted from pauper to prince charming.
I do like the idea that Dante could be permanently employed 😉

I’ve gotten a tad behind in reading and mail. This might end up in moderation as I have two links I think you’ll enjoy. (Whenever, neither is long…) I’ve added to The Dragon tale you inspired:
