Written for the Friday Fictioneers. A story about reconstruction begins after the photo.
Genre: Urban Fantasy/Humor
Rebuilding
Tiki stood before the abandoned apartment building, arms akimbo. “It’ll take a lot of work.”
Lita groaned. “Is it that bad?”
“I’m afraid so. All the wood needs to be replaced and the apartments need a major overhaul.”
“I had such high hopes.”
“Oh it’s not impossible,” soothed Tiki. “Merely difficult. I see you’ve made progress already.”
“Yes, the bougainvillea is lovely isn’t it?”
“An excellent choice. It’s roots will break down the cement in no time.”
“Really?”
“Yep. Now that the Humans are gone, it’s up to us Faeries to make proper dwellings from living things!”

lovely twist! π but this line filled me with dread “Now that the Humans are gone.”

Thank you, kz! The Humans simply “left,” and colonized a new world, with much better understanding of how to keep it clean. π

Loved this story. It has such a wonderful twist! Maybe the Faeries can live in harmony with nature…unlike us.
Just one correction: “It’s roots will break down….” should be “Its roots will break down….”

Oh yes, the faeries are all about integrating with nature and even encouraging it’s growth. We could learn a trick or two from them.
Thanks for the catch! I’ll get on that. And thanks for reading!

Dear E. A.
Hope the faeries do a better job with the place than the humans. π Nice one.

I’m sure they’ll do a terrific job. Maybe someday us humans will return and think, “What a wonderful place! Why did we ever leave?” π Thanks much for your kind thoughts and comments!

Yay for the Faeries. But don’t they steal babies?

Yay, but yeah, some do. Not all faerie-folk are nice. I think the majority are good, though, revitalizing and growing the forests to full health.

What a nice idea, using plants rather than heavy machinery to demolish buildings. It’s definitely the way forward. Nice one.
