Knight Esquire – Friday Fictioneers

Written for the Friday Fictioneers. A story about princes and dogs begins after the photo.

Genre: Urban Fantasy/Humor

Knight Esquire

“I am Sagewind, Knight Esquire to Queen Beel’s Faerie Court,” said the dog in the tree.

A talking dog? Curious, Alexa just went with it. “Ooookay. Why are you here?”

“Your son, Timmy, is a Faerie Prince.”

“Do you recall a vivid dream? A beautiful man visited your bed?”

Alexa gaped. She was pregnant days later. “That was real?”

“Indeed, the Faerie Prince’s indiscretions are infamous. I requested a corporeal form of loyalty and courage, to guard your princeling.”

“You’re a dog.”

“Minor setback! I am a warrior of substantial skill.”

“I see.”

“Now, would you mind awfully, helping me down?”

Each week, the Friday Fictioneers commune to compose up to 100 words from a photo prompt. Join our roundtable of intricate intrepid imaginators. This week’s prompt is here:

About EagleAye

I like looking at the serious subjects in the news and seeking the lighter side of the issue. I love satire and spoofs. I see the ridiculous side of things all the time, and my goal is to share that light-hearted view.

Ha! Just wait until he meets the mailman πŸ˜‰ Great story!

  2. List of X says:

That’s the same robotic warrior dog you wrote about last year, isn’t it? πŸ™‚

    • EagleAye says:

Nope. This guy is all new. Given corporeal form by faerie sorcerers. Unfortunately, the Knight Esquire wasn’t clear enough about the form he desired. Oh well, one makes do with what what is available. A fitting challenge for a knight!

  3. A knight in shining fur… a little setback to be ported into the canopy.

  4. Catherine says:

I love every word of it. Well done!

  5. symplysilent says:

Hi Eric; A wonderful little story. Thank you, Silent

  6. A chuckle story! Enjoyed it! Have a great 2014, EagleAye! πŸ˜‰

  7. Lots of fun, Eric. Happy 2014!

  8. Sandra says:

A fairy tale with humour, nicely blended.

  9. Jan Brown says:

Funny– “a minor setback” πŸ™‚ Great little faerie story, and an amusing take on the prompt. Well done!

    • EagleAye says:

Hehe. A knight must never be dissuaded from his course by circumstance. Our knight doesn’t give up easily, even against overwhelming odds. Thanks so much Jan! πŸ™‚

  10. DCTdesigns says:

Eric this one was fabulous. Minor setback indeed. The Fae are such wiley creatures.

  11. Lyn says:

LOL great story! He looks so majestic sitting up there in the tree — lord of all he surveys πŸ™‚

  12. Dear Eric,

I think I’d not only help that dog out of the tree but make some money off of him as well. Funny.

PS Does this mean the guy’s wife’s going to have a litter?

    • EagleAye says:

Haha. An added benefit of having a faerie knight for a dog. Then again, they may not listen to the talking dog, and just say he’s a liar. πŸ˜‰

Not in the fae world, but yeah all the females in the neighborhood would love to have a strapping knight as the father of their pups. πŸ˜‰

      Thanks much for visiting, Rochelle!

  13. Joe Owens says:

Ah the humor of a Knight with a dog’s life. A strong start for 2014.

    • EagleAye says:

Thanks, Joe. I’ve personally seen little dogs that behave like protective knights. The opportunity to write on it was there with this pic. I do hope 2014 gets better and better with each passing week. πŸ˜€

  14. Adam Ickes says:

At least he is taking the unfortunate situation of being a dog in stride.

  15. zookyworld says:

A Faerie Prince and a talking dog: Alexa is having quite a day! I can see how she would be not so sure about his “substantial skill” with him needing help down… but it certainly took skill for the pup to get up that tree in the first place!

    • EagleAye says:

Yeah, I think he hasn’t impressed Alexa too too much. Certainly he has verve and a willingness to tackle the task. Alexa certainly has some interesting days ahead of her with a talking dog who is a faerie knight! Thanks much for stopping in!

  16. liz young says:

So the guard dog won’t make the mistake of climbing trees again.

  17. Indira says:

Wonderful story to start new Year. Enjoyed.

  18. rgayer55 says:

Okaay . . . he got all these great skills, but can’t get himself down from a tree. I’m sure he’s going to require only the best dog food, a special bed, and other royal treatment. Oh, and don’t forget the paparazzi will be capturing everything for the grocery store gossip rags.
I loved this! What a fun story, Eric.

    • EagleAye says:

Hehe. I suspect Sagewind’s enthusiasm outstrips his skills. He may demand caviar, but I think Alexa will only be able to afford dog biscuits. The coming years may be hard on our Knight Errant, but then he’s been trained to overcome adversity. I’m happy to hear you enjoyed the story. Thanks so much for writing in!

  19. draliman says:

Great story! Alexa doesn’t seem too impressed by her son’s guardian.
I guess he should have been more specific when requesting his “corporeal form” πŸ™‚

  20. EagleAye says:

Uh yeah. The shining armor, rippling human muscles, and white steed he was anticipating are woefully absent. After his stint as guardian is over, he’ll have to have a “discussion” with the court’s wizards. And you guess right, Alexa isn’t much impressed, especially after she must help him out of the tree. In the coming years, perhaps Sagewind can prove his worth. Thanks much for your thoughts!

  21. kerrieanns says:

Wonderfully creative take on the prompt! And such a well mannered dog πŸ˜›

  22. kz says:

haha a fantastical tale with a hilarious twist. enjoyed this. happy 2014 πŸ™‚

  23. Robin says:

I am trying to catch up on some blog reading. So glad I came back to read this one! Very funny πŸ™‚

  24. Talk about whimsy! Wonderful twists and dialogue. Way to go EagleAye.

  25. Well, I hope he doesn’t get stuck in a tree often. She may have a difficult time helping him when her pregnancy is further along. Ha ha. Great, imaginative take!

  26. Shey says:

    cute, funny short.
