In these days of October, it’s time for things that go bump, things in the shadows, and things that slither and crawl. Shall we examine the things who’s very shape elicits revulsion and a sense of dread. We recoil from them instinctively. So let us celebrate them in this time of horror. Excellent photos! I have to say that spiders don’t bother me in terms of that ‘creepy’ factor. Though I am careful not to get bitten. Here in NZ we have the Katipo (White Tail) which isn’t venomous of itself, but the bite does deliver a load of bacteria that it’s better to avoid – the result can get quite nasty.

I have to admit to an instinctive revulsion, but the scientific side of me is fascinated. As long as a spider is “over there” I’m okay. It’s spiders “on me” that give me the willies. I got mighty close for these pics, but wasn’t worried because I know these web-spinners would rather not be “on me” either. 🙂
There’s spiders here, like the Tarantula, which won’t kill you with their bite, but they’re fangs are so huge you really don’t want to be bitten by one. Perhaps you’re lucky you didn’t inherit Australia’s Funnel Spider, eh?

Some great shots, Eric. While spiders don’t particularly worry me, I do avoid them if I can…especially the Funnel Web, Red Back and trapdoor spiders. The Sydney Funnel Web is the most dangerous spider in Australia…possibly even the world according to National Geographic.

I was just thinking about that one while responding to Matthew. I’ve seen it on several nature docs including “Australia’s 10 dealiest.” That fella likes moving in the same circles as humans which makes it especially dangerous. Spiders don’t bother me too much either. If they’re on me, though, I get pretty cranky about it. Otherwise, they’re a wonderful addition to nature’s gifts. I like them even more if they’re eating mosquitoes. 😉 Thanks much, Lyn!

Beautiful pictures. I’ve always liked spiders, although I don’t think I’d want any of those guys up there crawling over me. Beautiful from a distance, like tigers and supernovae. 🙂

A spider somehow got inside the screen door, I’m surprised it wasn’t smashed when the door closed. I tried to be helpful and coax it to go outside, but it jumped down and ran into the house! Once inside it stopped, so I tried to get it to move toward the door–but it would have none of it! It ran under my sandal next to the door and that was the end of that spider tale. I’ve become a mass murderer this week of: a cave cricket, a bazillion ants in the kitchen, and now a spider. I wonder what tomorrow holds!

Hehe. The insects will be telling horror stories about you to make the children behave. I try to avoid killing the bugs around me if I can, but I have no such rule for mosquitoes. Just about anything I find in the house is fair game as far as I’m concerned.
