King Megalomax feasted on duck and twenty other dishes. His terribly malnourished subjects waited nearby, hoping he’d throw a bone at them.
A messenger approached and offered a card to the king. It read:
Duck!
“What is this?” roared Megalomax, angrily.
A crossbow bolt suddenly smashed through the king’s head. He died in his soup.
The messenger replied blandly, “I believe it was a sporting chance.”

This is the first effort for a new writing challenge, Chimera 66. With a one word prompt, we must write exactly 66 words including the word prompt. This is my story. Look here for others: http://www.grammarghoulpress.com/chimera-66-writing-challenge-1/
Seemed like a fair warning!
Great take on the prompt.

I thought so. Just a simple directive. Follow it, or die! Glad you liked it, and thanks! 🙂

I love “He died in his soup.” And on it and around it, and and. . . . Very good one, EagleAye — dark and delicious as always! Best wishes on the new challenge.

Thank you! I think it’s especially delicious because duck soup was involved. That is, before the king died in it. 😉 Thanks so much for the kind words. I appreciate it. 🙂

And side-splitting elbow-rib to the Marx Bros. (a la Duck Soup) is always good, too, EA! 🙂

He was given a sporting chance! What more could anyone ask for?
I loved it.

Exactly. It’s his own fault for not following simple instructions. Glad to hear you enjoyed it. Thanks so much! 🙂

Haha! Both…apparently. Perhaps “Dumb Duck” as well. 😉

Hehe. Laughs are what I was aiming for. Well, “aiming” for the king too. 😉 I’m glad you had fun. Thanks so much! 🙂

This is not only funny, but it’s also charming! There’s this sweetness in how it’s written that makes me want to read more, and then it ends and I’m laughing but I want more! More!! I think he may have wanted more soup, too, but we don’t always get what we want. hehe
Excellent piece!

Oh man, I wish I could write more, but the challenge has a limit of 66 words. *sigh* I’m glad you were laughing. That was my hope, so I’m glad to hear it worked. Thanks so much, Tony! 🙂

You have to give them a chance. I think there is a rule or something. Funny!

Not a “sporting write” for the rest of us, lol. We are shot down before we can enter, lol.

This is so clever and absolutely hilarious. Maybe not so much for the king, but it sounds like he had it coming. 🙂

I think the watching crowd had a good laugh at least…after they dove into the king’s unoccupied feast. His lifeless body was shoved unceremoniously out of the way while the subjects finally got a good meal. And yeah, he did have it coming.
Thanks so much Suzanne. I’m glad you enjoyed the story. 🙂
