Low Tech
They finally made their escape. “I love Alaska!” crowed Ben. He counted the stolen bank money while Dan drove the stolen Range Rover. “They’re so low-tech here, and these fools don’t even lock their cars.”
Unknowingly, they’d stolen Sheriff Barker’s 2021 Range Rover (Security Edition).
They were amazed when the car suddenly locked itself. They were further shocked when it started driving itself. The car raced through some of the roughest terrain in the county. The men were hurled violently around the interior as they crashed across ravines and boulder fields. After two hours of mad careening the two collectively had sprained knees, twisted ankles, bruised ribs, a concussion, and a broken elbow.

At the Sheriff’s station, Sheriff Barker tapped his pad, directing the Range Rover where to drive itself next. Deputy Cullen said, “You get your Rover back yet, Sheriff?”
“Nope,” said Barker, switching to the Rover’s internal cameras. “I’m havin’ too much fun!”

I hope you had fun reading this. I had fun writing it. Every Monday, it’s time to finish the story with a photo and a first sentence as a prompt. This week the first sentence must be, “They finally made their escape.” The splash photo for this post is the image prompt. Look here for more stories based on the prompts: https://mondaysfinishthestory.wordpress.com/2015/01/19/mondays-finish-the-story-january-19th-2015/
That was definitely the wrong car to steal! π

Oh they’ll survive, although they’ll wish they hadn’t. They will indeed need a visit to the hospital, followed by a lawyer. Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for the visit. π

LOL! Great story Eric! I love that the Sheriff has not only the ability to tell the car where to go, but that he can watch the thieves! Such an imagination! Thanks for taking part again, and stay tuned for next week’s challenge! Be well – ^..^

Hehe. Watching them fly around inside is half the fun. Watching them droop bonelessly from exhaustion when he finally pulled them out, was the other half. Glad you got a laugh. Thanks so much Barb. I’ll be here next time around. π

Thank you! I was hoping it would entertain. It’s pretty easy to place one’s self in the Sheriff’s shoes, I think. Thanks again! π

I loved this! “Range Rover (Security Edition)” – the ultimate cop car. I love the way he’s flinging them round corners like it’s some sort of video game π They’ll be desperate to climb into a nice safe cell by the time he finally brings them in.

Oh yes, he didn’t even need to interrogate them. They were in a rush to confess all. Anything to get out of the car. They were terrified of it. Maybe one day, we’ll see a real version of this. Glad you liked it, and thanks much for the wonderful comments! π

It’s like those “capture cars” used to catch car thieves where the doors lock and the police are waiting round the corner, but with more fun attached!

That’s exactly what inspired me. I thought, “What if you took that to a higher level? And how could you have fun with it? ” Even Sheriff’s have to have some entertainment. π

A really fun story, EagleAye. I love the character of Sheriff Barker, with his mischievous streak – which comes across brilliantly in the last sentence. The description of the two ‘crooks’ being bounced around inside a very determined car is hilarious. Great read.
