An Unappreciated Repellent
He thought he found the perfect hiding spot, but it still found him.
With a growl, he leaped off the shelving, caromed off the printer tray, and landed perfectly behind the curtains. The thing’s evil head rotated, swinging its malevolent gaze directly to him. Twice more he shifted, but it always followed him.
Wynyrivom whimpered. He’d never escape from the beast. He could’ve done so much here. Make notes disappear. Hide the car keys. Swipe only one of matching socks from the dryer. Oh! It could’ve been so much fun!
A Household Demon was impervious to almost anything during its rampage through a house, except…cats. A swipe of a cat’s claw could kill him outright. With a last, sad, look he left the home forever.
When Rich and June returned home, Rich saw it behind the curtain. “Honey!” he called. “I thought you put away the Halloween decorations.”
“I did!”
“Nope. The robotic cat decoration is still behind the curtains.”
“Huh?”
“The one with glowing green eyes. It moves its head to follow movement.”
June entered the room. “Oh that. Let’s just throw it out. It’s good for nothing anyway.”

Excellent story! I reckon our house has been inhabited by a demon like that. One that has a fetish for odd socks. It’s always the same: even numbers of socks go into the laundry and odd numbers come out…

I know! We bought new machines recently, and I was certain I’d not lose socks anymore. Nope…no such luck. I think I need to install a robotic cat. 😉 Glad you enjoyed this, Matthew. Thanks bunches! 🙂

The weird thing in my household is that while my socks are always targeted by the Odd Sock demon, my wife’s remain in pairs. As I do a lot of the laundry (kind of making up for my failing to vacuum, mop, do dishes etc) I have no real explanation for this…

Haha! I think the larger socks of men offer more material to make a nest with. 😉 Our Demon is walking off with forks, but I’m not sure what he’s doing with them.

I have an actual cat, but it’s too lazy to be helping at all against the house demon mischief like missing socks and lost things.

I knew these other folks with a cat like that. It was extremely well fed. I can’t remember its name but the husband often called it, “meatloaf,” since it generally had that shape. That one wouldn’t be any good at demon hunting either. 😉

Sorry, I tossed mine too. 😦 Now I’ve got a pack of mismatched socks. I heard Jimmy Buffet tossed his out, and now he can’t find his salt shaker. I think Air Force folks in charge of nuclear missiles should be required to keep a cat around. 😉 Thanks so much, Barb! I’ll see you next week. 🙂

When I first saw the photo, I thought it was two green stick on dots on a curtain with a pair of socks sticking out from underneath. Then I looked closer and realised it was an actual cat. Great take on the prompt as always Eric. We’re keeping our black robot cat, he does a wonderful job keeping the house demons at bay because we’ve never had any trouble. He’s a pretty good mouser too 😀
