“The Americans are fools,” scoffed Ptolemy, as he worked the Russian mini-sub’s controls. “We’ve been here in Alaskan waters for two months, and they’re unaware of us!”
Ustinov peered through the periscope. “It’s still dark. I see almost nothing.”
“Not to worry,” soothed Ptolemy. “It’s dark for six months out of the year in Alaska.”
“I mean it’s really dark!” Ustinov fidgeted, frustrated that the lovely house by the lake was barely visible.
Ptolemy sighed. “Standard operational security. We’re surveilling a meeting place for high-value intelligence assets. It’s expected that they keep the house dark.”
Above them, Special Agent Haines cruised in a small boat with extremely silent electric motors. He basked in the bright sunlight of the day. He groused sometimes at some of his mundane tasks, like running for groceries in the boat.
Luckily, some jobs were truly fun. “Keep looking boys,” he grinned, and he sprayed the Russian periscope with yet another layer of black paint.

Hahahaha! Spraying their periscope with black paint! And the Russians thought the Americans didn’t know they were there! Who are the fools now!? LOL! Great story Eric! I spent a Christmas in Alaska one year and was surprised that it’s not completely dark. They have some periods of time of “dawn” like sunlight in the winter. Great story and thank you, once again, for participating in FFfAW challenge!

Hehe. In the end those calling another fool turned out to be the fools. Mostly, that was Ptolemy’s fault. He didn’t do his homework thoroughly enough. I’ll bet Christmas in Alaska is awesome. Glad you had fun. Thanks so very much! 🙂

No, he sure didn’t. LOL! (Alaska (where I was) was absolutely stunningly beautiful).

From what I hear, the whole state is beautiful. You just gotta catch it in daylight…or least view it “without” a painted over lens. 😉

You can train dolphins to do it. Or otters. Special agent otter… I can sense a television series coming in the future.

Oh yeah, Otters could do it, and they would make a game out of it and have fun. A tv series would be awesome. “The name’s Otter. Olli Otter.” 😉
Thanks Joe!

My first though was they’d been swallowed by a whale, but no, nothing so common as that. It’s much more fun when someone paints their periscope black 😀 LOL sort of reminds me of an episode of McHale’s Navy when “Old Leadbottom” ended up with black paint around his eyes from a pair of sabotaged binoculars.

Hehe. Ink on the binocs. That’s an old gag but a really good one. There’s nothing quite so much fun as messing with the Russians. The cold war was full of crazy stories. I couldn’t do the whale swallowing…that’s been done. 😉
Thanks kindly, Lyn! 🙂

Apparently the Russians are not aware of the term “pulling the wool over their eyes”….of course in this case it was paint and not wool. Unfortunately, in real life I believe the Russians are allowed to pull the “wool” … over our (leader’s eyes) 😨. While it is allowed to continue as they take over inch by inch . Great story, especially in this day in time.
