“The Americans are fools,” scoffed Ptolemy, as he worked the Russian mini-sub’s controls. “We’ve been here in Alaskan waters for two months, and they’re unaware of us!”

Ustinov peered through the periscope. “It’s still dark. I see almost nothing.”

“Not to worry,” soothed Ptolemy. “It’s dark for six months out of the year in Alaska.”

“I mean it’s really dark!” Ustinov fidgeted, frustrated that the lovely house by the lake was barely visible.

Ptolemy sighed. “Standard operational security. We’re surveilling a meeting place for high-value intelligence assets. It’s expected that they keep the house dark.”

Above them, Special Agent Haines cruised in a small boat with extremely silent electric motors. He basked in the bright sunlight of the day. He groused sometimes at some of his mundane tasks, like running for groceries in the boat.

Luckily, some jobs were truly fun. “Keep looking boys,” he grinned, and he sprayed the Russian periscope with yet another layer of black paint.
