Lance and Henry had long been suspicious of the nuclear missile base.
During the night, they dug up the base’s communications cable. Lance applied a tap to it. He plugged in earphones and began to listen.
“What’re they saying?”
Lance turned pale. “They’re asking command for the codes.”
“Launch codes?” said Henry. “They’re going to launch! They’re starting WWIII!”
“They’re asking for a piece,” whispered Lance.
Henry began shaking. “A piece of what? The world? What countries?”
Lance sagged.
“What?” shrieked Henry.
“They want a piece of the pepperoni pizza in return for the Domino’s coupon codes!”

I guess they’re not always up to no good at the missile base. They like Pizza like the rest of us. 🙂

Haha! That’s right. Sometimes they just want some munchies like everybody else. Thanks kindly, Deborah! 🙂

Little did they know that “order a pizza” was code for nuclear launch, and number of pieces stood for the nimber of missiles to be launched. I just hope they didn’t mention “extra mushroom topping” or “super-sizing the order”…

Yep. Extra-Jalapeno is code for “use the Neutron Warhead.” and a side of breadsticks is code for launching the nuclear cruise missiles. 😉

C – I like the way you bring us back from the brink of destruction with a killer punch line. I actually felt anxious reading this.

Oh that’s cool. I deliberately tried to ratchet up the tension with Henry’s hysterics. With what little information you had, Henry might’ve been right. I was leading everyone down the garden path just to take a hard left at the last moment. It’s one of my favorite tactics. Thanks so much, Tracey!

Very good. I wonder if Lance and Henry do this kind of thing often. I like the twist at the end.

Yeah, they do. They’re UFO hunters and constantly suspicious of the government. They were expecting flying discs instead of edible discs with pepperoni. 😉 Thanks much, Margaret! 🙂

Dear Eric,
Who knew that world peace could be achieved through a piece (of pizza).
C-As this is a conversation between only two people. There are a couple of places you could take out ‘said Henry or Lance. The reader tends to edit those out in any case.
Shalom,
Rochelle

Hehe. Yep. Even a piece of peace doled out piecemeal leaves a peaceful, easy feeling. 😉 Thanks for the concrit, Rochelle. I’ll bear that in mind. Thanks much! 🙂

Hah! Made me laugh at the end.
C – not sure if you need anxiously or suddenly. I think we know that it’s likely that Henry will be anxious, and can you even turn pale slowly? But then, I’m not a big fan of adverbs.

Awesome. I was hoping for laughs. I think you’re right about the adverbs. I’m still trying to break my habit of using them. I went with sugestions from you and Rochelle and changed things around a bit. Thanks much, Claire! 🙂

This is great fun. C- I, too, liked the build-up of tension and then the fun release in the end. I loved the shrieking Henry, it shows perfectly how scared he was.

Yeah, Henry was my literary device for increasing the tension. Seems he played his part very well. Thanks so much! 🙂
