Guang-Li had long owned the “Mandarin” restaurant. For decades, Peking Duck hung from the ceiling beside the massive Foo Dogs (Guardian Lions) just inside the entrance. But times were changing. Health inspectors regularly fined Guang-Li for the Peking Duck. They claimed it was unsafe food. Guang-Li thought they were mad.
Guang-Li’s son Michael (Huang-Fu) was influenced by American ideals, much to Guang-Li’s chagrin. Michael stood inside the entrance saying, “Father! You have to remove them.”
Guang-Li was sick of complaints about the Peking Duck. “Never! It’s our culture.”
“Someone might die!” Michael knew their history. They’d killed before.
“Ridiculous!” moaned Guang-Li. His own son knew nothing.
Mr. Blount the health inspector arrived just then, filled with self-importance. “Mr. Chong! These Peeking Ducks are still here.”
“It’s traditional food!”
Blount poked his pen into Guang-Li’s chest. “Remove them, now!”
The ancient Guardians perceived a threat, and the stone Foo Dogs moved suddenly. In seconds, Blount disappeared down their stony maws.
Michael sighed. “That’s what I’ve been talking about, Father! You gotta remove these Foo Dogs!”

Author’s Notes:
In Los Angeles in the 1980s, health inspectors tried to stop Chinese restaurants from hanging Peking Duck in room temperature. They claimed it was a health risk. Eventually, legislation introduced an “exemption.”

Great, now I’m craving duck. Nice twist at the end there, Eric. That inspector should have stopped while he was ahead!

Me too. I was just cruising yelp to see where I can get some. Unless I’m willing to drive through tons of traffic, I can’t get it. *sigh* And Blount just had to be so imperious and self-important, he poked Guang-Li with a pen. That was his last rude act.

Shouldn’t be rude in front of Foo Dogs. Too bad he learned that lesson too late!

Someone is going to get suspicious of health inspectors keep going missing at that place.

I suspect you’re right, but it’s hard to prove anything without a body. In this case, it’s unlikely anyone will go looking for Mr. Blount. He didn’t treat his co-workers any better. 😉

Well, I bet he wasn’t expecting that! I love Peking duck pancakes – especially when you can order extra sauce. There is one problem with them…there are never enough in just one serve 😀

Haha! I know how that feels. When we get duck, we have to get plenty of it. Shey and love it so much we can get possessive. 😉 Thanks much, Lyn! 🙂

Haha! I expect Mr. Blount was a bit bitter though. But he wasn’t worthless cuisine…he was jaded. 😉

I love this story so much I read it twice. You never fail to entertain and surprise with your twists. This story was a delightful foray into the Chinese culture, and I liked how you gave us a taste of the culture while incorporating your own twist.
I also love Peking Duck, so thanks for whetting my appetite!

Hehe. It’s a fact that smart and successful people all love Peking Duck. 😉 Having lived in the San Francisco area for twenty years, I absorbed a bit of the culture. I still get a surprised look when I ask for pickled mustard greens. 😉 I’m glad you enjoyed this one. Thanks so much for the glowing words. Much appreciated! 🙂

Okay, I guess these stone lions are a health risk, too.

Yep, but it’s only the actually magical ones that really take the Guardian thing so seriously. 😉

I think that magical lions are illegal in this country, except maybe in a few states and for medical use only.

Michael doesn’t like to be wrong! I don’t think his father cares…even if it would have been the about the Piking Ducks! Ducks and dogs…stay, but inspectors Must Go! 🙂

Haha! So true. Guang-Li probably still won’t budge on the Foo Dogs. They’d been in the family for 1,000 years. Besides, who would risk their lives handling them?
