Independence Day

Sammy was a young mouse, clever in some ways, naive in others. He liked to read the books he found in human debris, and he loved to cook. Sammy cooked extraordinarily well.

George the snake was getting old and tired. When he stumbled across Sammy the Naive but Talented, he quickly hatched a plan. “You make my food, Sammy,” he warned. “Or you’ll be my food!”

Sammy was terrified, and he believed he could never escape the menacing snake. So Sammy got cooking. He made Beetle Pie, Lizard Kiev, and Slug Pate. Sammy enjoyed the cooking. Still, he longed for his independence.

One day he found a huge box of curious tubes. They tasted peppery, but attempts to grill them over a fire proved disastrous. After a little reading, he realized what they were.

Sammy smiled.

“George!” called Sammy, carrying along a Roach Cupcake. “Time to celebrate!”

“It is?” George swallowed the cupcake, sparkling tubes and all. “What are we celebrating?”

As the fireworks began exploding within the snake, Sammy said, “My Independence Day!”

A fantastic take on the photo prompt! I really enjoyed reading this; thank you for sharing! It’s so great that you managed to word independence day in there, too. Really well done! 🙂

This reminded me of Ratatouille, although that rat never got stuck cooking for a snake. I’m not sure why the fireworks would explode once they’re inside the snake, but hey, in a world where snakes and mice talk and cook (and eat delicacies like Slug Pate), maybe fireworks are different too. 😉

Yes, if Ratatouille were a mouse. Nice take on the prompt and weaving Fourth of July fireworks into the tale. Seems snakes will eat anything.
