True Magic

Maureen sat down with a sigh outside of a Turkish cafe in New York. A street performer saw her and immediately recognized a tourist. “I am Vasile Karetskya!” he bowed. “One of only 1,313 True Magicians in the entire world. Behold!”

Honestly, the guy was good. Maureen dropped a fiver in his hat. Encouraged, Vasile did more. A crowd gathered and his tricks became even more elaborate. Soon, he had hundreds of rabbits leaping out of one hat and disappearing down another.

With his astonishing final act, the crowd roared with approval.

Light years away, Earth’s first hyper-capable starship cruised through hyperspace. On the bridge, Captain Lagrange gazed at the forward screen, scowling at what he saw there.

Beside him, eminent scientist Doctor Jin Soo Park watched the screen too. He said, “I always had a theory about this. For a magician to truly make something disappear, it must enter hyperspace.” He pointed at the screen. “Look at all those rabbits!”

“That’s not the worst of it,” grated Lagrange.

“Oh?”

“The other day, we had to dodge the Empire State Building!”

About EagleAye

I like looking at the serious subjects in the news and seeking the lighter side of the issue. I love satire and spoofs. I see the ridiculous side of things all the time, and my goal is to share that light-hearted view.

  2. Excellent! Any chance you could send Vasile over here to NZ? We have a LOT of wild rabbits that need a holiday in hyperspace! πŸ™‚

Hehe. I figure you might appreciate this. But you know, if one doesn’t bring those rabbits right back…I mean, there’s no air in hyperspace… πŸ˜‰ Thanks Matthew! πŸ™‚

Interesting thought. Although I haven’t explained it as such yet, in the retro-scifi series I’m currently writing on my blog, the alien spacecraft goes maybe 1/200th the speed of light, but to do so, it has to be surrounded by a low level warp field, the advantages of FTL technology even when you don’t go anywhere near “c”.

Yeah, a warp bubble of any kind could be handy when striking any debris. A dust particle moving fast enough can obliterate a satellite. Imagine what a one pound rabbit moving at .01c could do to a starship! Thanks James! πŸ™‚

Hahaha, I love that you always find a way to throw a humorous twist in your stories. It never fails to make me chuckle. Also, the diverse names was a beautiful and subtle touch. Well done and thank you πŸ™‚

I believe Vasile Karetskya could do well in realestate! He could clear the land immediately for new realestate. And, I can only imagine what hyperspace would eventually look like. People could conveniently disappear as well! That’s a powerful guy and he adds to a wonderful story!

True enough. Why pay for an expensive demolition? Vasile could remove it easily. No mess no fuss! Though, I think if Captain Lagrange ever found him, the good captain might have a few choice words for a “hyperspace polluter.” πŸ˜‰ Thanks so much! πŸ™‚

How funny! I’d never thought of disappearing items going into hyperspace. Great story.

Hehe. Either that or all those disappeared items end up in a government-quarantined little town in Indiana. I hear the barbecued rabbit there is pretty tasty. πŸ˜‰ Thanks kindly! πŸ™‚

Nice one. I also have heard that there are a lot of halves of women floating around out there as well.
