The wax museum in New Mexico was full of the most life-like sculptures. Each case glowed with green lighting. At the alien head case young Annette screamed and began to cry.
Bryan hugged her close. “It’s okay sweety. It’s not real, it’s just made of wax.”
The Pullman family moved on and finished their tour. When they left, the lights turned on and the strange green fields in the cases dissipated. The creatures no longer looked waxy and they became animated. The Chupacabra banged against its case and the Jackalope munched on a cactus.
The alien head began to wail. “Come back! Help me. I’m being held captive!”
“Settle down,” said a feminine voice. “They’re long gone. The aliens who built this place won’t leave anything to chance.”
“How are they doing this? And where’s my body?”
“I don’t know about your body. Perhaps it was damaged when your ship crashed? These green fields temporarily paralyze us and make us look like wax. Nobody knows we’re real and alive.”
“No one will ever find me?”
“I’m sorry, no,” said Amelia Earhart. “But that’s okay. You got me and Elvis for company.”

Great twist! On matters Earhart, there’s a plausible theory that she came down on Nikumaroro Island (Kiribati), south of her target – survived, called for help 57 times over the next 10 days (based on radio messages received), and never got it. Some of the transmissions were apparently received by the NZ cruiser HMS Achilles, among others. I keep meaning to check the records in Archives New Zealand, but haven’t got around to going in there for a while. Apparently the National Geographic have a team on Nikumaroro now looking for remains.

It would be. I’ve been an aviation history buff since I was 10. I’ve known about Amelia since then. I’ve always hoped that she survived. She was the world’s darling at the time. Maybe this shy woman had had enough and wanted to bow out of the limelight. Who knows?

Never ever imagined that the wax (lifeless) works would come out alive after sunset.Had taught about Ameila Earhart to my son in school.

I’m sure having her and Elvis to keep him company was not very consoling, but under the circumstances it’s probably better than being there alone. And, if you don’t even have a body, you’re not likely to be going anywhere! Everyone has to make adjustments in their life, but his is extraordinary. I suppose he could hope that one day they use his head to put on a robot! Enjoyable story…as always. 🙂

True enough. At least Amelia and Elvis still had their bodies, even though they couldn’t go anywhere. I understand the aliens permit them to have vivid and pleasant dreams at least. 😉 Thanks very much! 🙂

Poor guy, having Elvis for company. At least he doesn’t have the Beatles there as well. Amelia will have some conversations about flight though.

Good one. An interesting place for Aluens to hide but knowing they’ll never get out, that’s sad. Makes me look at the wax museum in Vegas entirely different!

Love this (as with most you write)! Now I love that you’ve put Amelia Earhart and Elvis here. I gotta ask if this is coincidence: the Pullman family….knowing that Bill Pullman was the fighter pilot president in Independence Day visiting area 51. (Maybe I’m too geeky and always looking for tie-ins.) You pull a lot together here. Geeky fun.
