Monique loved photography and loved traveling. Having an interstellar ship provided ample opportunity for both.
She stopped at Gamma Petreon to refuel. While she waited she roamed the orbital habitat. Happily, she discovered a fellow photography buff reselling cameras in his shop.
Branwyk was rather old, but his cybernetic limbs kept him mobile. His artificial eye glittered as they shared stories. Monique noticed an antique camera sitting on the shelf. “What’s that one?”
“My last camera,” sighed Branwyk, looking misty-eyed. “It’s an Oppenpax SX3275. Not the best hologram resolution, but so reliable! I carried it everywhere, even after I bought better cameras. We traveled to seventy stars together.”
“Looks damaged,” noted Monique.
“Oh, it’s beyond repair. It was with me, of course, when I had my accident.” He gestured at his cybernetics. “No more traveling for me after that. It’s why I opened this shop.”
Monique winced, “Sorry to hear that.”
“Such is life. Have a look.” He produced a hologram. “It’s the last photo I took with the Oppenpax.”
“Wow. Excellent framing. Such a dramatic scene.”
“You’re too kind.”
“No, really. It’s a great closeup of a giant worm’s teeth.”

Very generous of Branwyk to see this as an accident. A funny and clever story.

Ouch. The price he paid to get that one great shot!

Seriously. It’s a good thing he did it at a time when getting cybernetic limbs wouldn’t cost you…an arm and a leg. π Thanks Iain!

Ew. Actually, it reminded me that on “Star Trek: Voyager,” the Doctor was quite the holographic photographer.

Haha! I loved the emergency medical hologram. He was one of my favorite characters. He was so indignant all the time and mostly powerless to do anything about it.

Watched Empire Strikes Back on free TV last night. Reading “giant worm’s teeth” reminded me of Han, Leia, Chewie and 3-PO taking refuge in a hole, deep inside an asteroid. “Sir, it’s quite possible this asteroid is not entirely stable.” Too bad you couldn’t get a copy of the photo of the giant worm’s teeth π

I remember the scene well. That was escaping out of the frying pan and jumping into the fire! Loved it. If only they had that pic they wouldn’t have lost ten years from fright. π

Hehe. I like it when folks find the little bits I hide in stories. π

Fun story, Eric.
When I travel I try to avoid wherever giant worms have teeth.

Me too. Fire-breathing Aardvarks are another one to stay away from. That’s just a public service announcement. π Thanks CE!
