Needing To Worry

Harrison hated the country. There wasn’t a Starbuck’s for miles. He got stuck hanging out with his wife’s sister’s husband, Ty, on their Virginia ranch.

Ty pointed at some sliced logs. “Faeries were partying last night.”

“The proper term is ‘Homosexual,'” said Harrison.

“I mean the little people kind.”

You believe in faeries? You moron!

“Y’all believe in faeries?”

Of course not!

“Faerie Folk are havin’ their annual festival. Some people are scared.”

“Well, they kidnap somebody and sacrifice ’em to their faerie god.”

“Y’all needn’t worry. They only sacrifice folks who don’t believe in faeries.”

I like looking at the serious subjects in the news and seeking the lighter side of the issue. I love satire and spoofs. I see the ridiculous side of things all the time, and my goal is to share that light-hearted view.

That put me in mind of the “I do believe in fairies” scene from Peter Pan. So much so I had to google it. Thanks for taking me back.

Whew, good to know I’m safe from faeries! Also from pixies, sprites, nymphs, hobgoblins, nixies, griggs, dryads, orogiads, brownies, trolls and every other type of fae spirit that exists out there!

I think this is my favourite Friday Fictioneers story so far (this week).

I love the convoluted nature of this humour. The person who doesn’t believe in fairies is in danger from the fairies he doesn’t believe in…

Don’t all writers believe in faeries, little people, sprites and elves and leprechauna? How could we write fantasy without them? 🙂

  17. So what are the actual stats here, Eric? Is an “unbeliever” wandering in the woods more likely to meet up with some disgruntled faeries, a homicidal psychopath, or an angry bear or moose? I need to know the odds before we take our next camping trip. 🙂

Haha! You’re more likely to see a maniac, a bear, and moose sitting around drinking tea and comparing stock portfolios than see faeries. They only do the sacrifices once a year. And then they typically avoid places that humans frequent. You should be fine…mostly. 😉
