A Torturous Misunderstanding

The petroglyphs told the story of an unusual event. Kent and Jamie gazed intensely at the Peruvian Stones.

“It tells of the joyful and enlightening meeting between humans and aliens,” said Kent.

“Wow, how do know this language so well?” said Jamie.

Kent spoke solemnly. “Decades of careful analysis.”

Just then, a starship appeared in the air just above the Peruvian Stones. Kent ran beneath it, shouting a welcome to the aliens. A blue beam shot out from the ship and whisked him away.

Aboard the alien ship Flyrgix shook her head. “I’m so disappointed! The brochure said Earthers understand the Gyllanguit language perfectly and could direct us to the nearest spa.” She scowled at a picture of the Peruvian Stone. “But look! They misspelled ‘torture’ here. And who uses this word for ‘agony’ anymore?”

“Patience,” said Hallyxit, as Kent squirmed beneath his claws.

“How’s it going with the emissary who ran out to meet us?”

“I’ve put the microphone where any intelligent creature speaks from, but it mumbles unintelligibly.”

Flyrgix pointed. “There’s a LOT of high-pitched sound coming from this orifice.”

Hallyxit rolled his eye stalks. “That’s obviously the creature’s digestive system.”

Flyrgix crossed four arms. “Well then, the microphone isn’t close enough to it’s vocal chords. Push the microphone further up between it’s legs!”

Each week, photographer Barbara W. Beacham presents one of her photos as a prompt for flash fiction. She also starts us off with the first sentence. This week it was, “The petroglyphs told the story of an unusual event.” Look here to see what other folks wrote right here: https://mondaysfinishthestory.wordpress.com/2015/07/20/mondays-finish-the-story-july-20th-2015/

You always give me a good laugh Eric! I love where the microphone went. Too bad Kent is not a politician, otherwise the aliens would understand perfectly! Be well and thanks for another great story! ^..^

LOL’S. Poor Kent will now have an entirely different description to tell about how it is when humans and aliens meet! That is, if he can even speak now!

It may be a while before he can sit down to re-write. 😉 I think he won’t be saying the meeting between aliens and humans is ‘joyful’ anymore. Thanks much! 🙂

  11. Hee hee! The only other thing I can think of is, well, ‘aieeeeeeeee!’… (and maybe the local dairy herd was relieved at the near-miss…:-) )

Maybe the ad-line could be, “In space, aliens don’t hear you scream.” And yeah, the aliens planned to pickup a local cow like every other alien does, but the Kent ran out to meet them… 😉 Thanks much, Matthew! 🙂

  12. Poor Kent, he knows too much. I guess that’s why the aliens had to start from the end. Hahaha.
I like your smooth and clever transition from the earth scene to the starship scene. Loved it.

It certainly is. Perhaps Kent will no longer think the aliens are as “enlightened” as he once believed. I’m always happy to provide a laugh. Thanks kindly! 🙂

This is such an amusing take on the prompt. 😀 I think Kent is going to be re-writing his translation of the petroglyphs once he’s returned to Earth!
