Double Tap
She was unaware that she was being watched. Golden eyes stared hungrily.
Corinne sat on a rock beside the wood fire. The odors of cooking bacon wafted into the forest as she turned the fatty meat. She should’ve been paying closer attention to her surroundings, especially when cooking smells drew predators.
Too late, she heard the snarling on her left. Out of the corner of her eye, she could see the wolf. Its golden eyes blazed and saliva dripped down massive fangs. Corinne didn’t move. Any reaction would trigger an attack by the monster. Slowly, she untied a thong at her belt.
In one fluid motion she drew her shotgun and pivoted away from the wolf. Corinne fired, and the woman’s head flew apart. She patted the wolf. “Good girl, Freya!”
She walked to the woman’s body and fired into its remaining golden eye.
“Always, Double Tap,” she recited.
One could never be too sure with zombies.

Loved the twist in your story Eric! As always, a good read! đ I took this photo in Yellowstone. There is a rescue there and this was one of the rescues. I was looking at him through plate glass and was lucky not to catch any glare or reflections! Thank you for participating! Stay tuned for the next challenge! ^..^

I had too read that a few times to make sure I was reading it right. I always wondered how wildlife reacted to zombies.

I imagine animals don’t react well. Zombies probably smell pretty funky to them.

Nice the way you kept us guessing exactly what the “monster” was.
I definitely always double-tap zombies. Better to be safe than lunch.

Me too. When my wife and I are watching a movie and the big tough baddie gets put down, we always see the hero start walking away. Error! My wife and I both start chanting, “double tap!” When something proves very hard to kill, cut the head off and stuff it with garlic. Seems logical to me.

Because I think this film is great, I recognised the reference! It is such a necessary precaution…Woulda, coulda, shoulda. But for a moment, you had me wondering: ‘wait, she is going to “Double Tap” the Wolf?’ Nice twist and well done!

Haha! Cool. I hoped somebody would. It really is important to double tap. When watching other movies, Shey and me always tell the characters “Double Tap!” They never listen, and the bad guy returns *sigh* Glad I could keep you on your toes, and entertained. Thanks much! đ
