A Perpetual Motion Circus

“It’s designed for tiny amounts of power,” said Bernard, gesturing to the many-wheeled machine.

“How tiny?” asked Sam, science reporter.

“Far less than a watch battery, roughly. I just intuit this stuff without math. Thing is, I never connected it to any power.”

Sam watched the wheels spinning like mad. “So…?”

“It’s a perpetual motion machine!”

“Impossible!” scoffed Sam. “That would violate the second law of thermodynamics.”

“But nothing is powering it.”

Sam shrugged. “Then maybe it is.”

Inside the tiny drive wheel, one flea said to the other, “Keep running! The exit is just ahead!”

Author’s Notes:

Perpetual motion machines have been sought after for centuries. The idea is a machine that once running would never stop, even though it never receives any source of power. Such machines cannot truly exist.

Flea Circus: “…is a circus sideshow attraction in which fleas are attached (or appear to be attached) to miniature carts and other items, and encouraged to perform circus acts within a small housing.”

About EagleAye

I like looking at the serious subjects in the news and seeking the lighter side of the issue. I love satire and spoofs. I see the ridiculous side of things all the time, and my goal is to share that light-hearted view.

  3. You aced it with this one, Eric. 🙂 Five out of five Mexican jumping beans for your inventive tale!

Did you get this idea from historical research? I learned one time that this is the way cranes operated in the 1600’s — propelled by human feet. Talk about life being a vicious circle!

    I’m glad I wasn’t drinking anything when I read the last line. I’m sure I would’ve snorted it out my nose. 😀 😀 😀

Well, at least while they’re spinning wheels, they’re leaving my cat alone. Hey, maybe if we caught enough fleas, we could solve the renewable energy power problem. Fleas breed like…well, like flees 😀
